If you devote more time than you’d like to shaving, waxing, plucking, trimming, or bleaching unwanted hair, you may be an ideal candidate for laser hair removal. Laser hair removal is one of the most commonly requested aesthetic procedures, and for good reason: It’s a safe and effective way to reduce unwanted hair long-term. From her patient-centered practice in Dumfries, Virginia, Dr. Zerline Chambers-Kersey and her first-rate team provide laser hair removal services to patients in the Prince William County area. As one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the United States, laser hair removal is a safe, non-invasive treatment that works by delivering short-pulse durations of laser energy through your skin and directly into active-growth hair follicles.
When active hair follicles absorb this laser energy, it causes them to become disabled so they can no longer produce hair.
Dr. Chambers-Kersey and her team use the xeo® laser by Cutera®, one of the most versatile and advanced cosmetic laser technologies available, to get rid of unwanted hair.
The xeo laser can safely remove unwanted hair from virtually any part of your body, and it’s as effective on large treatment areas as it is on smaller areas. It’s also safe and effective for any skin type.
Laser hair removal is commonly used to reduce unwanted hair on the upper lip, chin, face, neck, bikini area, legs, chest, back, and shoulders.
In addition to drastically reducing the amount of time you spend tweezing, waxing, or shaving, the treatment also can leave your skin looking noticeably smoother, silkier, and more uniform.
Before treatment begins, you are given eye shields to protect your eyes from the laser, your skin is cleansed, and, if necessary, the treatment area is marked with a cosmetic pencil to help guide the laser and ensure proper coverage.
During the procedure, a handheld device is passed spot-by-spot over the treatment area, allowing the laser to send quick pulses of light into each active-growth hair follicle. Although it’s relatively painless, it does feel somewhat like having tiny rubber bands snapping against your skin.
Depending on the size of the area you’re treating, your session may last anywhere from a few minutes to longer than an hour.
Because hair grows in cycles and the xeo laser only targets active-growth hair follicles, you need to undergo multiple treatments to get the results you desire.
Most patients see a 10% to 25% reduction in hair following the first treatment, and further reductions over the course of five to seven sessions, each spaced four to six weeks apart.
While laser hair removal does significantly reduce unwanted hair, results are long-lasting rather than permanent. You may need to undergo future treatments to maintain your results.
