A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection of your bladder, and the urethra — which is the lower urinary tract.

Symptoms of UTIs

The symptoms of a UTI can include:

  • A burning sensation while urinating
  • A frequent or intense urge to urinate, even though little comes out when you do
  • Cloudy, dark, bloody, or strange-smelling urine
  • Fever or chills (a sign that the infection may have reached your kidneys, also known as pyelonephritis)
  • Pain or pressure in your lower back or lower abdomen
